This holiday home was an exploration in how to create a building of both a strong architectural character and economy. It’s designed by Parsonson Architects and located on Pekapeka Beach, New Zealand. The building is a modular rectangle construction with a very simple form. The plan is a rectangle and is divided into 3 parts, the solid bedroom forms at each end support a floating roof over the living space in between. This layout allows the living room to face both east to hills and west to the sea. The house is heated with a radiant system in the stone floors, and despite the hot climate it is not air conditioned, but passively cooled with a combination of overhangs, shades, and operable windows. Not whole this site was buildable because of its irregular shape and a small grove of eucalyptus and pine trees but the house become quite a big project anyway. The house also has irregular shape and is split into two wings in order to maximize the views and reduce its massing. Thanks to such shape and a lot of glazing almost every room in the house is connected to the outdoors and has access there. This gorgeous 10650 square feet house is located on a 17250 square feet lot near the Sierra Madre mountains. It’s clad in brown/black volcanic stone, IPE wood, white stucco and steel. There is quite a big pool near by and a terrace above it. They both are protected from sun and neighbors with two massive oak trees. This creative part office/studio, part recreational getaway is designed by Rockefeller Partners Architects. It’s located at the base of a large pine tree in the backyard of the house which belongs to an artist and lover of nature. The treehouse is 170 square feet and is perched twelve feet off the ground. Though modest in size, the plan is efficient and allows for a studio space/living area and a toilet room. Deep-oiled wood siding, mahogany windows, and a Rheinzink roof were chosen for their natural qualities and rich palette. We're in the process of downsizing from a 4000 sq ft home to a 1200-sq ft loft. Do you know, loft living sounds more romantic than it actually is? We find that we really miss the traditional division of space. We miss having rooms. We miss the privacy!

We've been looking into options of dividing the space. Drapery is one, but do you have any idea how expensive a piece of fabric with four stitching is? It's quite a mystery actually, how much drapery can cost. The other option is to go with a company like the Sliding Door, but they are really pricey too.

We found this company, Loft Wall, today and we thought it might be a good option. They make portable dividers that you can customize the sizing and the panels. They are not cheap but they are not too expensive either. You can visit the web site to download the price list. Keep in mind that the published prices are retail, and no one pays retail!

Carrie's Bed in Sex in The City II

Did you see Sex In the City II this past weekend? We thought it wasn't as bad as the reviews said it was... Seriously, don't you think the critics take this movie a bit too literally? After all, the movie is all about the clothes and the fantasies...

Anyway, did you like the bed in Carrie's and Big's apartment? We do. And we know exactly where to get it too.

The bed is made by Vanguard Furniture and you can see it here (it is shown as tufted but it's an optional feature. You can get it untufted plain as shown in the movie. The nail heads can be changed to polished nickel as well).

The fabric, which is what made the bed, is by Kravet Couture and it's called Velvet Gate, pattern number 29868. Shown in the movie in black/white, it is also available in other colorways. The fabric is a linen/velvet combination. Very, very pretty in person. You'd love it.

The fabric is priced at $149/yard but you can get it for $104/yard at the Kravet fabric section on our site. Enter the pattern number "29868" (the quotation marks is recommended for precise search) and you can see all the colorways available.

Men usually don't have that much say in the decorating of your home, do they? We think because if we leave it up to them all they will buy is big screen TVs and Lazy Boy chairs. Say what you will about stereotype. It exists because it's usually true.

So consider this a "Straight Women for Straight Guys" intervention. Furnishings can be very masculine and stylish at the same time. Here are some of our favorite furniture lines that have that combination: This line is what we would describe as modern American classic. Very clean-lined. Solid, neutral colors. A little bit pricey, but it's the kind of furniture that won't go out of style for a long time.

This is another one of our favorite collection. Manly, but not overly so. There are some soft touches in the details that we like. Less expensive than Thomas O'Brien, and the quality is just as nice.

If you are looking for an affordable line with coordinating and matching items, Brownstone is a good choice. Very inexpensive. which is really nice. We like the upholstery collection a lot more than the casegoods (industry term for wood pieces).

If your man likes really, really simple, clean-lined things he'll like this line. Pricey (more on the wood pieces than upholstery-the upholstery products are a bit more reasonable). It could be a little severe (because it's all straight lines and geometric and muted colors).

As always, warm up these rooms with accessories--such as rugs, artwork, fresh flowers, books etc. We can't emphasize enough what a huge difference this would make.

Modern Bookcases

We've been struggling with the decision whether to buy an iPad or not. We are late adopter, or maybe even no adopter, type when it comes to technology. There is something about holding a book and flipping the pages that is really satisfying to us.

That is, until you want to carry ten books with you when you travel. And most of them are hardbacks. Times like that make us wonder if printed books are going the way of CDs, you know. Like, who buys CD anymore?

But as we were driving down the Melrose Design district the other day, this gorgeous bookcase from the Poliform showroom almost caused us to crash the car. It is STUNNING! It's huge and it's perfect if you have a loft with very tall ceiling.

We don't have the pricing information for this item, sorry. Poliform is very high-end and upscale, so it is probably really expensive. But, if you have a really good carpenter, it's probably really easy to build! And, wouldn't it be great as a room divider too? Just make sure your carpenter anchor it properly.

You probably heard of the site. It's about real people in their homes--some famous, some not. The article also went on to discuss how people can relate more to "real places" than professionally decked up places frequently featured in decor magazines, which contributes to their ever growing popularity.

We love the Selby too but in a way, it's like watching Rachel Ray cooks vs a professional chef. There is no competition! Magazines offer beautifully shot, gorgeous decor that we can fantasize about. We don't want to look at houses that look just like ours, for god's sake. For example, look at the image below from Homebodies, one of the blogs mentioned:

One Very Cool Arm Chair

It's usually a good idea to add a couple of arm chairs to your living room configuration. You can do a really fun fabric to punch in some colors ; add some dimensions of the room by varying the height so it's not so flat, and perhaps most importantly, style it up a bit.

If you haven't had a chance to read the NY Times today, check out this article about this couple living in a mansion in Newport. What interests us most about it was not that the house was grand, but how this couple--who seem really unpretentious--manage to live a very authentic life that reflects who they are. There's a quote in it that we love--"At some point you'll have to come to terms with who you are, however unpleasant, if you are going to be anything at all".
